The wood is local, with sticks coming from the Brownsville area just north of Eugene. Several of the tools used to make the brooms have parts from the 1870s, with one bench vise made in 1878. Some of the brooms even have face carvings on them. Besom brooms are sewn rounder and are more aerodynamic than other types of brooms, including shaker brooms, which are sewn more flat. These include brooms for fireplaces, kitchen brooms and besom brooms, commonly known as witch’s brooms. Scheumack’s brooms are created in a traditional way, with several types designed for different uses. “After I got out of the hospital, I really just centered on making the brooms,” he says. “I got into a motorcycle accident, and my neck was broken in six places,” Scheumack says.Īfter this, Scheumack began thinking: What could he do to provide for his four children? He eventually decided that broom designing would be his career. That all changed with his injury, though. Initially, Scheumack didn’t do this to make money. “So, I lived up there and studied knifemaking, blacksmithing, broom making, woodcarving, all these different things.” “He gave out grants to younger people to go live with the old timers before it disappeared, and he gave me one of those grants,” Scheumack says. Clinton started a program that would help Scheumack find his passion for making brooms. He previously worked with a historical center called the Ozark Folk Center, back when Bill Clinton was governor. “The business started in Arkansas in the Ozark Mountains,” says Scheumack, 72. The company is the brainchild of Thurman Scheumack, who founded the business in 1981. Scheumack Broom Company makes several kinds of brooms, ranging from kitchen brooms to witch’s brooms, and they have been featured in several well-known movies.
